Transpennine Route Upgrade

TRU, is a transformative, multi-billion pound railway programme that will better connect passengers in the North between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds and York.

TRU will transform the Transpennine main line into a high-performing, reliable railway, bringing more frequent, more reliable, faster, greener trains.

Scope

HSRS is leading the System Safety and NTSN compliance workstreams for the W3 project (Huddersfield to Ravensthorpe). Our current GRIP 4 activities include the finalisation of the System Definition, System Safety Plan, and the running of multiple hazard identification workshops to enable detailed updates to the project Hazard Record; utilising our valuable experience gained on the electrification of the Great Western Mainline.

Delivery Challenges

  • A challenging CSM-RA and NTSN submissions timeline to achieve a supportive Safety Assessment Report (SAR) for achieving successful GRIP 4 Stage Gate;
  • Lack of input from the wider project team in the risk management process.

Benefits Delivered

As part of our activities we have brought a number of benefits to the project:

  • The generation of a detailed CSM-RA and NTSN assurance programme for the W3 project at GRIP 4 (Single Design Option Development) has helped raise awareness across the project of the importance of engagement in the assurance process.
  • Regular Hazard Record reviews with Project Engineers and Design Contractor's Responsible Engineers enabled sufficient development of safety requirements and inclusion of appropriate compliance statements and evidence referencing for demonstration of risks being reduced so far as reasonably practicable.
